California is a state proud of our diversity and status as home to people from all over the world. Arizona-like policies that convert police into immigration agents do more to harm our communities than to help us. They have no place in this state.

Last year, the state was poised to pass a law to protect California from the dangerous "Secure Communities" deportation program but we had to go back to the drawing board when ICE changed its rules and forced the state into the program. Assm. Tom Ammiano has unveiled a new version of the TRUST Act to reign-in ICE's dangerous and misguided jail deportation program. It will bring safeguards for our basic rights, and it will ensure California doesn't follow the path of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
